About the Event

Join us as we celebrate both the republication of Jackie Williams' The Hill With A Future and the coming placement of Capitol Hill's Millionaire's Row on the National Register of Historic Places, with an unprecendented walking tour down this prestigious residence block. The tour will include background from Williams' book, new research from row-resident DJ Kurlander, and the rare opportunity to see inside some of these historic homes. Attendess will also have the opportunity to be among the first to get a copy of The Hill With A Future!

The tour will start at the south base of the Volunteer Park water tower with a bit of background about the neighborhood and the park itself based information found within The Hill With A Future. We'll then meander down 14th, stopping at houses along the way until we get to Roy Street where the tour will end. From there we will walk to Canterbury Ale House at 15th and Mercer to distribute copies of Williams' book for those who purchased them and otherwise hang out and converse. The tour will include a limited inside tour (main foyer and one or two connecting rooms) of the Anson Burwell house at 709 14th Avenue E and the Shafer Baille Mansion at 907 14th Avenue E and possibly more.

Never heard of Millionaire's Row? Well here's a bit of historical background: Between 1900 and 1902, real estate executive James Moore purchased and platted some of the land to the south and east of Volunteer Park and called it Capitol Hill. The source of our neighborhood's namesake. Within this development he set aside a small strip of land on 14th Avenue from East Prospect to just south East Roy as an exclusive private community for himself, his friends, and his business associates all of whom played a significant role in shaping Seattle. Join the tour to learn more! Also read our exclusive interview with two of the residents who are leading the effort to get Millionaire's Row designated as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places!
